I wanted images that came back to the core of the city
of Jerusalem to give some sense of the golden magic
of the old city, of the peace that still seeps from
its stones despite the turmoil and fighting that has
plagued it for the last two thousand years. I wanted
these images to represent the three major religions
of the area.
The floor that the postcards are scattered on is the
floor in front of the cross at Calvary in the Holy Sepulchre
Church.
The border wraps around the mosque of the Dome of the
Rock, just inside its outer walls. Because it encloses
the Jewish Holy of Holies, the Moslem site of Mohammed's
ascent to Heaven, and the story from Christianity's
Old Testament of Abraham and Isaac, it seemed a fitting
way to enclose the quilt.
